2006 AT A GLANCE

2006 AT A GLANCE

Wow! The year just flew by. Two thousand six was a spectacular year for the two of us.

As you may remember, Heidi finished college at the end of 2005. It took two months for the state of Oregon to do their review and send her an Oregon Teaching License. In the mean time, she worked as a classified substitute (teacher’s aid). Once she received her license she took over a class for students with high functioning autism at the school where she did her student teaching. Over the next few months she studied to take the Washington State Teachers Test, and passed with flying colors! This school year she is working at Washington Elementary as a first grade teacher. She is working in one of the highest poverty schools in the area, which is challenging, but she is finding it very rewarding.

Dustin continued working Loss Prevention with Gap Inc. until this summer. He is now back in college working toward a Business degree. He received an A on every assignment this semester! He is the top achieving student in his accounting class, and top male in his business class (marriage does wonders!). For the first time in his life he is finding he actually enjoys reading. On a couple of occasions I (Heidi) have even found him choosing to read for fun.

In January, we moved into a new, bigger, and better apartment. We absolutely love our place! It’s 1,215sq ft. with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a deck, a fireplace, two walk in closets, and an attached garage. We had a nice place before, but this place is so much better. It has a real home feel to it. Did we mention how much we love it!

In May, we went on a cruise to Catalina, San Diego, and Mexico with Dustin’s entire family. It was a lot of fun. Our favorite parts were riding bikes around Catalina and of course dinner.

In August, we realized we had lived up here for 5 years (including college) and had never spent time traveling around here. So we got in the car and spent 8 days traveling Oregon, Idaho, and mostly the fantastic state of Washington. We went to Hells Gorge (where Heidi camped in a tent for the very first time-she even set it up), C’oir DeLane, Spokane, The Ginko Petrified Rain Forrest, Merritt (which turns out to only be a cul-de-sac of 6 houses), Leavenworth (a cute little German town where hotel’s are outrageously priced), Snoqualmie Falls, Seattle (where we went over the longest floating bridge), Pike Place Market, Heart of the Hills in the Olympic National Forest (gorgeous view and best camp site--we would like to come back here next year), Crescent Lake (beautiful!), La Push (where we camped on the beach), Hoe Rainforest, and skipped our stops at Long Beach and Neah Bay because we were tired and missed home, including our cat Oksana. Our trip taught us a very valuable lesson -- don’t trust map quest. We had a wonderful and memorable time. We hope to visit some of those places again in 2007.

In September, Dustin took Heidi on a Willamette and Columbia River Boat Cruise for her 24th birthday.

In December, we celebrated our 3rd anniversary and were blessed with the opportunity to spend two weeks in California with both of our families. December was also a special month for Heidi because she became a first time blood aunt. Her sister, Holly, had a baby named Sienna Grace Havenhill (you can see pictures of Sienna at www.havenhill.blogspot.com).

We are very grateful to God for all that he has provided for us. He never cases to amaze us. We hope you and your family are well and healthy. May you be abundantly blessed in 2007.

Checking This Out

I have been so impressed by the ability to watch Holly and Donny's lives unfold over the miles, I thought it would be fun to try it. I guess I should start taking pictures.

These first few blogs are just going to be about figuring out how to make this thing work.
